From position size to a trade plan.

Quantity = risk budget ÷ (|entry − stop| + entry × entry fee + stop × exit fee)

Start with the amount you intend to risk and the price that invalidates your setup. This calculator sizes a linear position so the estimated stop loss, including entry and stop-exit fees, fits that budget.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter the account equity and risk percentage you have chosen for this setup.
  2. Enter entry and stop prices. Direction is derived from the stop; add take profit only if you want reward metrics.
  3. Enable With fees to set maker/taker rates and the entry and stop order types. The defaults are examples, not exchange quotes.
  4. Check units against the venue's minimum size and quantity step. Round down and recheck before placing any order.

Worked example

With a $10,000 account, 1% risk, a $100,000 entry, and a $95,000 stop, the risk budget is $100 and the fee-free size is 0.02 units. Enable fees with an illustrative 0.02% maker rate, 0.05% taker rate, limit entry, and market stop. Risk per unit becomes $5,067.50, so quantity falls to about 0.0197336 units and notional to $1,973.36. Add a $110,000 limit target to see about $196.51 potential net profit, or 1.97R.

What this calculation assumes

  • For linear spot or quote-settled crypto instruments, with quantity in underlying units. Not inverse contracts, options, or a forex lot converter.
  • Assumes the stop fills at the entered price. Funding, spread, slippage, and liquidation are not modeled.
  • Leverage is not needed to size a fixed risk budget. Check margin availability and liquidation separately with the venue; neither is calculated here.

Educational estimates, not trade recommendations. Actual fills and exchange rules can change outcomes. Money inputs use one consistent quote currency; the $ symbol is an example currency label.

Frequently asked questions

Does leverage change position size?

Not when the risk budget and stop distance stay fixed. It changes estimated initial margin. Increasing position size because more leverage is available increases risk.

Can I use this for Bitcoin or Ethereum?

Yes, for a linear instrument priced in one quote currency. Enter BTC or ETH prices in that currency; the quantity is in BTC or ETH. Inverse coin-margined contracts need a different formula.

Is my loss capped at the result?

No. A stop can fill worse than its trigger, and liquidation or fees may change the result. The output is a planned scenario, not a guaranteed maximum loss.
