RISKREWARD PRO: TRADE JOURNAL TEMPLATE BEFORE ENTRY Date / time / timezone: Market / instrument / venue: Direction: Strategy tag: Setup thesis and invalidation: Account equity: Chosen account risk (%): Initial planned risk (1R, currency): Entry / stop / target: Planned quantity / notional / leverage: Entry and exit fee assumptions: Gross R:R / fee-adjusted R:R: Screenshot or chart reference: DURING THE TRADE Time | Event | Quantity | Fill price | Fee | Reason Record each add, partial exit, stop change, and target change. AFTER CLOSING Final exit time: Gross price P&L: Total commissions: Funding paid (negative if received): Other costs: Net P&L: Realized R = net P&L / initial planned risk: Did I follow the plan? What changed and why? Execution tag / process mistake (if any): One specific observation to review: WEEKLY REVIEW Date range: Total closed trades / wins / losses / breakevens: Net R / average net R per trade: Results by strategy tag, including sample sizes: Largest deviation between planned and realized risk: Were fees, funding, and partial exits reconciled? Which result was driven by an outlier? One process question for next week: Examples and calculations are educational, not trade recommendations. A completed example
This hypothetical trade shows how the fields connect. It is an accounting example, not a trade recommendation.
- Before entry
- $10,000 account, chosen risk budget $100, long at $100, stop at $95, target at $110. Hypothetical fees: 0.05% on entry and exit. Fee-inclusive quantity is approximately 19.61746 units before venue rounding.
- During the trade
- No adds, partial exits, or stop changes. Keep the original $100 risk denominator.
- After closing at the target
- Gross price profit is about $196.17. Entry and exit fees total about $2.06. With no funding or other costs, net P&L is about $194.11, or +1.941R.
- Review note
- The gross target was 2R using price-distance risk. Net realized R uses the fee-inclusive $100 budget. The difference follows from costs and the chosen denominator, not a calculation mistake.
Keep the fields useful
Start with the required price, size, risk, and cost fields. Add one strategy tag and one execution tag. A field earns its place when you use it to answer a review question.
For partial exits and scale-ins
Keep an event or fill ledger instead of forcing several fills into one entry/exit pair. Include timestamps and fees, and reconcile the total before calculating net R.
For Excel or Google Sheets
Use the labels as columns, with a separate table for fills. The download is plain text, not a spreadsheet with formulas. Keep initial risk in its own cell and calculate realized R as net P&L divided by initial risk.
For weekly review
Use the same date range and cost convention each week. Show the trade count alongside tag results so a single good trade is not mistaken for a repeatable pattern.
Calculate the fee-inclusive size, check realized R, or compare spreadsheets with a dedicated journal.
