Start with the question, then the number.

A useful journal records both what happened and why you acted. Begin with a small repeatable set of fields, capture position changes while they are fresh, and use a weekly review to connect strategy tags with net outcomes. Add complexity only when it answers a specific review question.

Your working checklist

  1. Capture entry, stop, size, planned risk, and the setup thesis before entry.
  2. Record adds, partial exits, stop changes, and the reason for each decision.
  3. Reconcile net P&L to fills, commissions, and funding after closing.
  4. Tag strategy and execution separately so results do not blur them together.
  5. Review the same fields weekly and choose one process question to investigate.
